Van Coke Kartel - ENERGIE cover EP is out now!

By Rouleaux van der Merwe

VAN COKE KARTEL’s cover EP, ENERGIE, is out NOW on iTunes exclusively.  Pre-orders of the 12” vinyl is also open at here as of now.  A free digital download of the entire EP is available upon purchase of the vinyl.

Wynand Myburgh:

THIS ALBUM IS ALL ABOUT FUN

The members of VAN COKE KARTEL spent most of 2015 on other projects. Francois and Jedd Kossew launched the FRANCOIS VAN COKE debut solo album.  Wynand Myburgh kept busy managing Jack Parow and Fokofpolisiekar’s affairs, while Dylan Hunt joined the band Southern Wild.

The band wanted to do something together again and they wanted to do something different.

They decided to record a cover EP by some of the greats, those who have influenced them along the way.  According to Jedd Kossew, it was important for them to stay true to themselves, their style of music, but also to stay true to the songs they decided to cover.

But…

“How do you choose 5 songs?”

Francois van Coke:

IT’S MUCH EASIER FOR US TO RELEASE GOOD SONGS WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY GOOD SONGS

ENERGIE TRACK LIST

1. ENERGIE

Dylan Hunt:

RE-INTRODUCING AN OLD SONG TO A NEW AUDIENCE

Van Coke Kartel explain

Covering this song is quite personal for Van Coke Kartel.  Francois says that Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis was the only Afrikaans music they listened to growing up and the only thing they felt they associated with.  Wynand used to do sound for Kerkorrel at some of this shows back in the day.

2. HELP!

Jedd Kossew:

THE BEATLES ARE MY FAVOURITE BAND OF ALL TIME

Van Coke Kartel speak about Help!

Francois and Jedd have been jamming this song in their solo acoustic set for some time now.  Help! is the first single from ENERGIE.  A fun fact is that Jedd sings a chorus for the first time in a Van Coke Kartel song.

3. I GOT YOU (I FEEL GOOD)

Francois Van Coke:

WHO DOESN’T WANT TO SING ‘I FEEL GOOD’?

Watch Van Coke discuss I got you

Wynand says that they wanted to do a song which is fun, they can jam and people would know.

4. GOT TO GIVE IT UP

Francois Van Coke:

IT’S SOMETHING I WANT TO SHARE WITH PEOPLE. IT’S ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS

Why it had to be a Thin Lizzy song

Francois also says that he loves everything about this song.  “Every note that’s played on it.  I love the original version.”

5. BORN TO DIE

Wynand Myburgh:

BORN TO DIE IS OUR ATTEMPT AT A POP SONG

VCK relates to this song

Van Coke Kartel was eager to put their own spin on this pop song and they think it is now “Spaghetti Western-sounding”.

*Recorded and Mixed by Theo Crous at Bellville Studios
*Mastered by Rogan Kelsey

Pre-order the vinly from Permanent Record now.

VCK’s new offering, ENERGIE, is a fun filled homage to their varied influences. Pressed on ruby red wax, the record spins at 45RPM and exemplifies their role as one of South Africa’s most exciting rock & roll acts.

This EP consists entirely of covers, some more expected than others, like the album’s name sake ENERGIE, by Johannes Kerkorrel & Die Gereformeerde Blues Band, HELP! by The Beatles and GOT TO GIVE IT UP by Thin Lizzy, as well as atypical renditions of Lana Del Rey’s BORN TO DIE and the James Brown classic I GOT YOU (I FEEL GOOD).

The Mystic Boer rides again...

By Rouleaux van der Merwe

Valiant Swart's historical debut is re-issued as limited edition vinyl record!

Nineteen years after Afrikaans rocker Valiant Swart's ground-breaking debut, "Die Mystic Boer" (Eng: The Mystic Boer) was released on CD it is now being released on vinyl, in association with Cape Town design agency (and friends of Valiant) Cow Africa. Fans can rediscover the iconic songs that first put the Boland punk on the map, including "Die Mystic Boer", "In Die Transvaal", "Ware Liefde" and "Buitenkant".

The "Die Mystic Boer" vinyl package includes a high-quality vinyl record (180-gram, 33RPM), the classic album cover, as well as a full-colour inner sleeve with the lyrics and a collage of historical reviews and exclusive photos from the group's personal archives. Talk about collectors' delight!

Says Valiant: "Since childhood I've dreamed of making a record. In 1990, when I started making music full-time, I thought it was just a matter of time before my debut would be released. Since 1985, however, CDs started replacing vinyl records as the preferred music format. In 1991 The Dolly Rockers, at that time the most popular alternative group in Cape Town, used up the last available vinyl in the Cape for their EP. There was literally no more stock of the required raw material to make vinyl records in the Cape! For a poor alternative Afrikaans rocker like me it was an unthinkable and impossible dream to make a CD. I had to wait another five years for my debut release - on CD.

By that time, vinyl records had largely disappeared from the scene. The vinyl revolution of the last couple of years got me thinking that it would be quite special to do a limited edition of one of my albums on vinyl. Great was my surprise when Charles from Cow Africa phoned me one day to suggest that they assist me in realising this dream. I immediately agreed and today I finally have my debut album on vinyl - albeit twenty five years later!"

The original album cover was carefully revised and updated by Cow Africa. The music itself was left intact; sound levels were only slightly adjusted for the vinyl format.

According to Charles Miller from Cow Africa: "The rediscovery of vinyl is something all of us at Cow are quite passionate about and we have a couple of serious collectors in our ranks. One day we were discussing some of our favourite artists that should have been released on vinyl but never were and Valiant's name came up first. We knew what we had to do."

This release of "Die Mystic Boer" brings Valiant Swart's music to the vinyl format for the very first time. Fitting then, that it's his debut album and just in time for its twenty-year anniversary in 2016.

Only 500 of these limited edition collectors' pieces are available at R300 each.

Carlo Mombelli Stories Now Available online!

By Rouleaux van der Merwe

Carlo Mombelli's STORIES was recorded live in studio using vintage microphones from the 1940s and mastered on reel- to- reel tape machines.

The ensemble for this recording was Daniel Pezzotti on cello, Adrian Mears on trombone, and Dejan Terzic on drums, a quartet that Mombelli has been playing with in Europe for the last four years.

For this recording he travelled to Switzerland with Mbuso Khoza, a traditional Zulu singer who improvised over the chamber quartet music.  Unlike the schooled European musicians in the band, Mbuso learnt his music on the mountains of Kwa-Zulu Natal while herding his father’s sheep.

The vinyl tracklisting is as follow:

Side A

A1 // Motian The Explorer

A2 // Song For Sandra

A3 // Little Window In The Kitchen

Side B

Hilton Schilder - Rebirth

By Rouleaux van der Merwe

Composer and multi-instrumentalist, Hilton Schilder was born into a musical family in Lotus River, Cape Town. He is the son of esteemed South African jazz pianist Tony Schilder (1937-2010) and nephew of Chris Schilder of Cape Town’s groundbreaking jazz-fusion group of the 1970s, Pacific Express. He was given his first instrument, a drum, at the age of three.

Hilton’s musical trajectory has taken him through a variety of groups and collaborations in the capacity of both a composer and a performer. He partnered with Mac McKenzie in the mid-80s to form the Genuines, a rock outfit that channelled the folk music of the Cape through punk. The band’s first two releases on the Shifty label tethered them to the broader Voëlvry movement and cemented their legacy in the history of South Africa's alternate music scene.

Listen to the legendary SHIFTY RECORDS release of the Genuines debut Goema  > www.thegenuines.bandamp.com/album/goema

Post-Genuines, Hilton immersed himself more deeply into jazz and was a member and contributing composer to Robbie Jansen’s Sons of Table Mountain. In the early 2000s, he performed with the Goema Captains of Cape Town and released his first solo album entitled No Turning Back on Mountain Records in 2003. He was the project leader of the South African/Swiss jazz ensemble Iconoclast in 2008.

In 2010, Hilton fought cancer, losing a kidney in the process. While in hospital, he heard what would become the composition "Rebirth" during a morphine-induced lucid dream. Waking up bedridden and without access to an instrument, he memorised what he could recall of the piece by imagining a piano keyboard on the ceiling.

"Rebirth" is a spiritual masterwork by a seasoned musician at the height of his powers - a sonic journey of sweeping light and shade that is both personal and universal in the depths it traverses. The piece is issued over two sides of a vinyl 7-inch single in a sleeve featuring Schilder's distinctive ink drawings.

Rebirth is released on the Cape Town label SHARP-FLAT > www.sharp-flat.com

Rebirth is now ONLINE in the PERMANENT RECORD shop and ready to ship.

Carlo Mombelli - Stories

By Rouleaux van der Merwe

"Carlo Mombelli is nothing short of a national treasure – you cannot argue with the depth, passion and inventiveness of his music" Lloyd Gedye

Roastin' Records, Angry Africa and Permanent Record are doing a collaborative vinyl release of Carlo Mombelli's emotive album titled STORIES.

‘STORIES’ is a really personal record for Mombelli: an opportunity to pay respect to the people that matter in his life – his wife, his children and his musical teachers. The final product reaffirms that Mombelli, now in his early 50s, is still very much in rude creative health. He is still pushing the limits of sound and writing challenging beautiful work.

Album will be available towards May 2015.
